Upcoming 2019 Youth Events

Dear Confirmands and Parents of the Confirmands,

The Confirmation ministry at Christ Evangelical Lutheran Church (CELC) will begin its program on Sunday morning, September 8, 9:15 – 10:20 a.m. in Room D5 (Also known as the Preschool room that is closest to the bathrooms located near the Social Hall).  I believe that we will have four students participating as second-year eighth graders, and as many as six students participating as first-year seventh graders, depending on who desires to partake in this ministry opportunity.

A basic outline is provided below of our ministry for the 2019-2020 schoolyear.  The goal of CELC’s confirmation ministry is to provide a two-year program that teaches a deeper understanding of the Bible, our Lutheran understanding and application of our faith, and daily Christian discipleship for our seventh & eighth graders.

As a parent, I understand the demands which envelope families in our current culture.  Sports, school, service groups, family, traveling, and a list of other things demand/deserve our time and attention.  I am sympathetic to the lives of our congregational families.  At the same time, we proclaim that our faith is a commitment and a priority.  Therefore, I have designed a Confirmation ministry that will make the most of the two-year period we have, in order to cover all the material needed for our confirmands to make an educated Affirmation of their Baptism.

Worship:  Worship is at the heart of who we are as the Body of Christ, where we praise God in the midst of our faith community, and where we experience the sacraments at their fullest. Attendance and participation in worship services is expected.

Sunday school: Confirmation is designed to prepare our youth with the ability to confidently affirm their faith in Christ.  In order to have a solid foundation of the Christian faith and our Lutheran heritage, our youth need to be in class as much as possible.  Likewise, our children learn what is important to us, as parents, in part by how much time we devote to something.  The Sunday school class will be run by Dan Ingraham & Pastor Jeff, with Pastor Jeff leading the class on the second & fourth Sundays of each month. Weekly attendance is expected for the Sunday school classes.

Acolyte/Lector/Greeter/Usher: As followers of Christ and members of a faith community, our confirmands are expected to participate in the worship life of CELC. Many of our youth are comfortable serving as an acolyte. However, this might not be a fit for all of our youth. Therefore, in order to ensure that all of our confirmands are able to participate in the weekly life of CELC, confirmands may choose to serve in any/all of the following roles: acolyte; lector; greeter; usher. Please inform Pastor Jeff as soon as possible with regard to which ministry your confirmand will serve.

Family Faith Notes: Martin Luther’s original intention regarding the Small Catechism was that it be a source of faith material for the head of each household to lead and teach one’s family.  Throughout the centuries, this practice has changed dramatically and evolved into our modern Confirmation ministry.  Parent involvement in the faith journey of each youth is of the utmost importance.  Therefore, each week during our course year, youth will bring home a one-page Family Faith Notes (FFN) to be completed by the following week.  These FFN pages will provide families with the opportunity to discuss faith as it is lived out in our daily lives. The FFN will be returned to Pastor Jeff each week for his review.

Visits to Churches of Different Denominations: Along with confirmation students from Christ Lutheran Church in Lorain, Redeemer Lutheran Church in Elyria, and Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Elyria, our youth will visit at least one non-Lutheran church. Thus, our youth will learn about how different expressions of Christianity view Holy Baptism, Holy Communion, and worship. These visits will take place on two Saturday mornings from 9:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.

It is my most sincere prayer that each family will see that all of our youth are getting the education that they deserve from me and their church family.  I know that we will have a great year learning, serving, and having fellowship with each other and God. If you have any concerns, please do not hesitate in bringing them to my attention.

Fall Sunday School: September 8 through December 15, 2019.  Please note there is no Sunday school on Sundays that fall during Avon Lake City School seasonal breaks, excluding teacher in-service days.  Sunday school will run from 9:15-10:20 a.m.

Eighth Grade Student & Mentor Yoking Ceremony: October 27, 2019.  Each confirmand is expected to pick a mentor.  Ryan Smarsh will coordinate this ministry for our youth and mentors.  Please note, Pastor Jeff will not be serving as a mentor.  Each confirmand’s decision needs to be discussed and approved by the parent(s) and Pastor Jeff.

Spring Sunday School: January 12 through April 19, 2020.

Confirmation Service Prep and Confirmands’ Dinner with Pastor Jeff: April 25, 2020.  This will run from approximately 6 p.m. – 7:30 p.m.  Our 8th graders are required to be present for this event.

Confirmation Sunday: April 26, 2020.

I thank you all for your time and your support of our congregation, as well as your devout faith to our Risen Lord and Savior, Jesus the Christ.

September 8, 1:30-3:00 pm, Confirmation/Anchor youth group meeting

It is a CELC tradition that each confirmand, alongside their chosen mentor, celebrate their spiritual growth with a Yoking Ceremony.  This year we will be having our Yoking Service on Sunday, November 11 at 10:30 a.m.  We are asking that both confirmand and mentor will attend Sunday school at 9:15 to choose the stole that will be used at the service, along with complete other activities. Thank you.

╬ Confirmation Sunday school classes will meet every week, before the service, from 9:30 a.m. to 10:15 a.m.. There will not be Sunday evening classes.

The purpose of Christ Lutheran's confirmation program is to afford young men and women an opportunity, during their junior high years, to both study and experience the Christian life.  These two years will lead to an opportunity for them to make an informed decision about publicly affirming their faith in the churches "Rite of Confirmation".

For more information on our two-year Confirmation program, please contact Rev. Jeff Steeber at revsteeber@gmail.com or 440.933.6263
