Dear Confirmands and Parents of the Confirmands,

The Confirmation ministry at Christ Evangelical Lutheran Church (CELC) will begin its program on Sunday morning, September 9, 9:15 – 10:20 a.m. in the Lakeview Room.  I believe that we will have 3 students participating as second-year eighth graders, and as many as seven students participating as first-year students, both seventh & eighth graders, depending on who desires to partake in this ministry opportunity.

In an effort to communicate what we seek to accomplish in our Confirmation ministry here at CELC, a basic outline is provided below of our ministry for the 2018-2019 year.  The goal of CELC’s confirmation ministry is to provide a two-year program that teaches a deeper understanding of the Bible, our Lutheran tradition, and daily Christian discipleship for our seventh & eighth graders.

As a parent, I fully understand the demands which envelope families in our current culture.  Sports, school, service groups, family time, traveling, and a list of other things demand our time and attention.  I am sympathetic to the lives of our congregational families.  At the same time, we proclaim that our faith is a commitment and a priority.  Therefore, I have designed a Confirmation ministry that will make the most of the two-year period we have, in order to cover all the material needed for our confirmands to make an educated Affirmation of their Baptism.

Worship:  Worship is at the heart of who we are as the Body of Christ, where we praise God in the midst of our faith community, and where we experience the sacraments at their fullest. Attendance and participation in worship services is expected to occur at least two – three services per month. Youth who are unable to attend on a regular basis may receive additional “at home” assignments to complete with their family.

Sunday school: The two years of focused education that is provided during our Confirmation ministry are designed to prepare our youth with the ability to confidently affirm their faith in Christ.  In order to have a solid foundation of the Christian faith and our Lutheran heritage, our youth need to be in class as much as possible.  Likewise, our children learn what is important to us, as parents, in part by how much time we devote to something.  One of the goals of this ministry is to establish connections and relationships with others that will carry into the future.  The Sunday school class will be run by Dan Ingraham & Pastor Jeff, with Pastor Jeff leading the class on the second & fourth Sundays of each month. Weekly attendance is expected for the Sunday school classes. Youth who are unable to attend on a regular basis may receive additional “at home” assignments to complete with their family.

Acolyte: The word “acolyte” means “follower”. As followers of Christ, our confirmands are expected to participate as acolytes. A tradition of our faith is for our youth to assist the leadership of our worship services.

Family Faith Notes: Martin Luther’s original intention regarding the Small Catechism was that it be a source of faith material for the head of each household to lead and teach one’s family.  Throughout the centuries, this practice has changed dramatically and evolved into our modern Confirmation ministry.  Nevertheless, parent involvement in the faith journey of each youth is of the utmost importance.  Therefore, each week during our course year, youth will bring home a one-page Family Faith Notes (FFN) to be completed by the following week.  These FFN pages will provide families with the opportunity to discuss faith as it is lived out in our daily lives.

Visits to Churches of Different Denominations: Along with confirmation students from Christ Lutheran Church in Lorain, Redeemer Lutheran Church in Elyria, and Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Elyria, our youth will visit two local non-Lutheran churches. During these visits, our youth will learn about how different expressions of Christianity view Holy Baptism and Holy Communion. These visits will take place on two Saturday mornings from 9:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m., one in October and the other in December. Our group will meet at Redeemer Lutheran Church, which is located across the street from Lorain County Community College, in Elyria.

Lutheran Camp Retreat: A retreat is currently being planned to take place at Camp Mowana for a weekend in April 2019. The youth will travel with chaperones to Camp Mowana on Friday evening, and return to Avon Lake on Sunday morning. The date and cost of this retreat will be communicated as soon as the plans have been finalized. Youth are expected to participate in this retreat; however, if a family believes that there may be an issue that would keep their child from attending the retreat, a conversation with Pastor Jeff can be scheduled.

Final thoughts with regard to this ministry: It is my most sincere prayer that each family will see that all of our youth are getting the education that they deserve from me and their church family.  I know that we will have a great year learning, serving, and having fellowship with each other and God.

Some important dates to put on your calendar now:

Fall Sunday School: September 9 through December 16, 2018.  Please note there is no Sunday school on Sundays that fall during Avon Lake City School seasonal breaks, excluding teacher in-service days.  Sunday school will run from 9:15-10:20 a.m.

Eighth Grade Student & Mentor Yoking Ceremony: October 28, 2018.  Each Eighth grader is expected to pick a mentor.  Ryan Smarsh will coordinate this ministry for our youth and mentors.  Please note, Pastor Jeff will not be serving as a mentor.  Each Eighth grader’s decision needs to be discussed and approved by the parent(s) and Pastor Jeff.

Non-Lutheran Church Visits: The first visit will take place on Saturday, October 6, 2018, and the second visit will take place on Saturday, December 8, 2018.

Spring Sunday School: January 16 through April 14, 2019.

Confirmation Service Prep and Confirmands’ Dinner with Pastor Jeff: April 27, 2019.  This will run from approximately 6 p.m. – 8 p.m.  Our 8th graders are required to be present for this event.

Confirmation Sunday: April 28, 2019. It is understood that Avon Lake City Schools will be concluding their Spring Break during the weekend of April 27-28, 2019. The recent practice at CELC is to hold the Affirmation of Baptism service on the final Sunday of April. Therefore, unless a majority of our three potential confirmands are unable to attend the prep and the service, Confirmation Sunday will be held on April 28, 2019. Potential conflicts need to be shared with Pastor Jeff ASAP for scheduling purposes.

I thank you all for your time and your support of our congregation, as well as your devout faith to our Risen Lord and Savior, Jesus the Christ.

                                                                                                            In Christ’s Peace,

                                                                                                            Pastor Jeff Steeber   +

Confirmation Sunday school classes will meet every week, before the service, from 9:30 a.m. to 10:15 a.m.. There will not be Sunday evening classes.

The purpose of Christ Lutheran's confirmation program is to afford young men and women an opportunity, during their junior high years, to both study and experience the Christian life.  These two years will lead to an opportunity for them to make an informed decision about publicly affirming their faith in the churches "Rite of Confirmation".
